Healthcare FAQs

Ventilation performance directly influences airborne contamination risk. Air change rates, filtration, and pressure regimes all sit within HTM 03-01. Air curtains at entrances also play a role by reducing the ingress of external contaminants and maintaining pressure differentials between clinical and non-clinical zones, which is where products like Biddle's SR and DoorFlow2 ranges come in.

Fan coil units like Biddle's DECO manage the ambient temperature of spaces such as wards, consulting rooms, waiting areas by circulating heated or cooled air. Air curtains work at the threshold, creating an air seal at doorways to stop conditioned air escaping and outdoor contaminants entering. Most healthcare buildings need both: FCUs for internal comfort control, air curtains at high-traffic external doors (A&E entrances, loading bays, ambulance bays).

HTM 03-01 covers the full range of healthcare premises, not just theatres: wards, pharmacies, mortuaries, and general clinical spaces all fall under it. Part A applies to new installations and major refurbishments; Part B governs ongoing management and maintenance of existing systems. Any equipment specified for an NHS project should be assessed against this.

Yes, though it needs careful sequencing. Retrofitting standard commercial units into clinical environments is generally discouraged, as healthcare spaces have specific requirements around noise, hygiene-friendly surfaces, and redundancy that off-the-shelf equipment doesn't always meet. Biddle's DECO and ProAir are built to drop into refurbishment programmes with minimal disruption to patient-facing areas.
